How Traffic On The Internet Works: Organic Vs. PPC

The Internet is a hustling, bustling whirlwind of possibilities everyday.  People clicking and searching from home, from school and from work.  Imagine a freeway with 300 million potential cars passing by a single point.  A billboard if you will.

Now  imagine that same billboard int he middle of the Mojave Desert.  No cars for hours on end.

Which billboard do you want your business on?

Just like anything, you’ll need to find ways to put your website in front of as many people as possible.

Ultimately your goal should be to attract organic search traffic from Google, Yahoo, MSN, and the other search engines.  However, in the beginning this can be difficult:  Enter the world of paid advertising.

PPC or pay per click advertising, allows you to “rent” space on a number of prominate sites for a fee.  Usually everytime some one clicks on one of your advertisements, you are charged.  Depending on the advertising network, clicks can cost 5 cents to 5 dollars.

Spending some money to rent traffic, is definitely recommended.  But PPC marketing is an art unto itself.  Start slow, read and learn.  If you prefer, higher a PPC professional to organize a campaign for you.  Usually a good PPC manager can optimize profits and expenditures making your advertising more profitable.

Once your website has caught up in the organic rankings, of course you can back of the PPC.   Unless of course you’re making money, then it makes more sense to leave it running.
